FAQs

What is your political affiliation?
I know that this should not be a difficult question, but, to me, it is. In the first place, the position of School Board Director is not politically based; it is community-based. I have a strong attachment to Spokane as a wonderful community in which to raise children. Values that strengthen families are important to me. It seems to me that sometimes Republicans and sometimes Democrats and sometimes both and sometimes neither are espousing values that strengthen families. I think I am generally conservative, a little cautious about making changes, but willing to do what needs to be done. Back in the days of political affiliation registration, I was a registered Republican. I am wondering if this two-party system is working to our detriment in that, rather than helping us find ways to reach agreement and solutions to problems, the two parties just lead to endless disagreement and stalemate. Sometimes we identify the wrong enemy.

How many women are currently on the school board?
One. Four men and one woman. No professional public school educators.

How good are you at finances---balancing budgets? How much personal debt do you have?
I can tell you that we live within our means. We have raised eight children on what was sometimes a very meager salary and sometimes a very adequate salary. We successfully adjusted to financial circumstances without incurring major debt. Creative thinking and commitment to the things that are important are absolutely necessary when budgeting. For example, in the school district, it is more important to keep teachers teaching and other vital school personnel functioning than to fund School Board Retreats. Priorities, priorities, priorities!!
